Italian States, Reign, Republic, Colonies and Possessions.. Then San Marino, Vatican and Local Issues: on the 5th of may, the whole Italian Area will be on the market for the second auction by Zanaria Aste. Foreign lots will be present as well, in particular France and Switzerland…
From the beginnings of the 19th century to the Canceled Stamps from Naples
The appointment with Zanaria Aste is for the 5th of May. This year, the Milanese company’s auction will be located in the heart of the city, Palazzo Giureconsulti, Piazza Mercanti 2. At 17 o’clock the auctioneer will start selling the lots, amounting to over a thousand.
The areas of interest include the whole Italian area, from all points of view: from the States to the Reign, from the best showpieces of the Republic to the Services, from the Colonies to the Possessions. Not to be forgotten are San Marino, the Vatican, Smom and a session dedicated to other Countries, that favours France and Switzerland.
The sale starts with a variety of the most remarkable items: showpieces like a red 15 cents of Lombardo-Veneto, that traveled from Vicenza to Venice on the 1st of June 1850, in its first day of use. It is lot n° 13 and starts from 12.500 Euros.
Its value according to Sassone is 57.500 Euros. Or the following year’s “Mercurio” 30 cents, light yellow: without gum, hi grade, little flaw at the bottom. N° 64 in the catalogue. It starts from 6.000 Euros, value according to Mercuriale is 80.000 Euros.
About fifty showpieces from Naples with the distinctive 19th century flourish cancel, introduced to prevent re-usage of stamps. A very specific area, that doesn’t lack amateurs. Among the most significant offers there is lot 134, that includes a 2 grana with Vittorio Emanuele II and the manual in “bastard” type, used in Dentecane (Avellino) on the 27th of June 1861.
Its is mainly valuable for its late date of usage, and the set can be worth over 20.000 Euros. It starts from 6.000 Euros . Also for the Romagne there is one first day. Lot 207, a baiocco dating 1st of September 1859. It’s on the back of a letter that traveled between Bologna and Budrio as a carriage forward, i.e. at the consignee’s expense. As per appraisal, it is worth over 65.000 Euro; bids will start at 10.000.
Whole sheets, blocks and… designs
A broad choice for the Reign. A complete “floral” dating 1901, complete and well centered, for example, starts from 4.000 Euros as lot 362, versus the over 20.000 Euros on the catalogue.
For 4.000 Euros there is a “Volta violet” with no hinge, number 374 (Sassone: 11.250). The best showpieces are found among the Services. Two “return flight” triptychs stand out, no hinge.
The first one, number 380, is related to Luigi Questa’s aircraft; the other, number 381, to Vincenzo Biani’s. The first one starts from 19.000 Euros, the second one from 16.000.
“Francalettere” are not missing. A 10 cents on its document, still new, wrongly perforated “18-81” instead of “8-8” gets on the market for 5.500 Euros, while Sassone valuates it 50.000.
Between 451 and 473 there are several proposals of Republic series of the first period, among which “Saint Catherine”, “Risorgimento”, “Tobacco” and “Athletics”, often in whole sheets or big blocks.
Also on auction the “Diciottenni” in lots 507 and 508: the light blue one in its official card together with the letter of the then minister Paolo Gentiloni starts from 200 Euros; the pair from 400. An unusual offer from the Vatican: the twelve subjects of the “Council of Trent” serie, dating 1946, in the charcoal drawings by Corrado Mezzana. It’s number 541 for 2.500 Euros.
Campione d’Italia, CNL, Eritrea and more
The rest of the catalogue offer a diverse range, where items related to Campione d’Italia (1.012-1.019) and to the Committees of National Liberation (1.020-1.043) stand out. At the same price, let’s say 4.000 Euros, start three overprinted sets from three different places: lot 1022 from Arona, 1035 from Piacenza and 1036 from Ponte Chiasso. For their details, Lubiana (lots 1073 to 1085) stands out among the Occupations, and Costantionpolis among the Offices Abroad (1112 to 1120).
Also Eritrea constitutes a well supplied section (1131 to 1171), where you can find offer number 1132: the first overprinted, dating 1893, complete and in blocks of four, with or without hinge, all well centered, starting from 3.000 Euros, about one tenth of the Sassone’s price.
Among the colonial items we must point out the never hinged blocks of four for Alessandro Manzoni: number 1252 offered for 5.000 Euros, while the catalogue values the set between 30-60.000. France stands out among the foreign productions, with several offers, especially classic stamps with no hinge, but also with miniature sheets, carnets and services. A real treat is lot number 2081: two series for railway parcels, in old franks, in block of four and original gum: starting from 5.000 Euros, not even one third of the Céres mercurial.
Nine exceptions for private negotiation
The list includes nine exceptional showpieces, again from the Italian States, literally priceless. They will be sold by private negotiation. Covers and fragments of Lombardo-Veneto, “svolazzi” from Naples and documents from the Provisional Government of Romagne. This last one is remarkable for the three 20 baiocchi on cover from Bologna to Marsiglia, that Sassone valuates over 112.000 Euros.
