Hundred and sixty lots in one afternoon
Zanaria Aste opens up to numismatics. After the sale dedicated to the postal world on the 5th of May,on the 6th it will be paper money's turn. The appointment is at 6 pm in Milan, at Palazzo Giureconsulti; in the very centre of the city, a few meters away from Piazza Duomo in Piazza Mercanti 2. About 160 lots available, divided into two sections: a first one (items 1 to 125) dedicated to Bank of Italy productions; the second one (items 201 to 236) exclusively focused on Tuscany material.
From Kingdom to Republic
Cash vouchers and State bills, issued to limit the circulation of metal coins, are the protagonists of lots 1 to 22. Among the most significant items, the Umberto I 10 liras dating 1883 (lot 10) and 1888 (11), the first one in its double effigy version, both signed by Dell’Ara-Crodara and judged by experts as almost excellent or excellent in quality. For these items you’ll need to bid at least 1.500 and 1.400 Euros respectively, knowing that they will be awarded to the best bidder and bids under the catalogue price will not be accepted.
Also the following chronological phase includes valuable items. Italia Turrita is to be pointed out: she has lent her face for a 25 liras dating 1895 (signatures Dell’Ara-Righetti); it’s lot nr. 16. Any fior di stampa starts its run-up from 8.000 Euros. There is a 1902 Vittorio Emanuele III 25 liras, excellent and very rare to be found in these conditions. With item number 17, it bears the names Dell’Ara-Righetti and starts from 20.000 Euros.
Other strong items are in the section dedicated to Bank of Italy. For the Kingdom period, the 1944 500 liras and 1.000 liras stand out, undersigned by Introna and Urbini but never issued. Real amateur items, in excellent quality and perfect mint. They bear numbers 61 and 62 in the catalogue, evaluated 8.000 and 9.000 Euros.
Two are the items that stand out for the Republic’s period. A 1950 500 liras with the allegoric figures of Lawand Justice, signed by Menichella-Urbini, is of excellent quality and starts from 10.000 Euros; its lot number is 63. Three years older is a 5.000 liras with the Republics of Venice and Genoa, dominated by the diademmed head. This banknote, certified by Einaudi and Urbini, is the 85th in the list; it is of excellent quality and to enter the bid you’ll need to start from 7.000 Euro.
Magnifier on Tuscany
A story of its own is the seventeen-hundreds paper money used in Tuscany. It’s eight lots of never issued documents, originated bythe Depositeria of the grand duke Pietro Leopoldo; they enrich an area remained mysterious up to a few decades ago, of which there are only a few exemplaries on the collectors’ market.
Prices range from 800 to 1.400 Euros; an exception is represented by item 108, that collects four notes for 3.600 Euros. A richer chapter is dedicated to the Cassa di Sconto of Florence, with its first banknotes issued in pre-unified Italy. Five items are on offer, divided by nominal (lots 209 – 213), all dating 1817, each one evaluated 18.000 Euros and up. At the beginning of the Italian Kingdom, among others, Banca Nazionale Toscana, Banca Toscana di Credito and Monte dei Paschi di Siena were active. The auction offers lots for each one of them. The second one has the most important pieces on offer. Like lot 226: it’s a 1864 200 liras, only known in two exemplaries. The one that is presented here is considered of outstanding conservation and starts its run-up at 22.000 Euros. The other one… is part of the Bank of Italy collection!
